…Goddess of wisdom, warfare and craft.
I’ve loved ancient mythology since a was about 11 years old – Chinese, Egyptian, Roman etc., but Greek was always my favourite. I can’t really explain why, but the stories filled me with wonder.
Since losing my hearing, it’s been quite difficult for me to do those things I took for granted before, such as listening to music. I don’t quite hear it the same and often mishear lyrics, or miss them altogether. To be able to fully follow a conversation, I need to have visual cues – facial expressions, even subtitles – to not miss out on important details. The though of listening to a podcast was pretty much an absolute no-no, but I felt that I was missing out. My partner suggested listening to something I enjoyed and we looked for the best rated on Greek Mythology. That is how I found Let's Talk About Myths, Baby.
What a treat! The host, Liv, retells all of those old stories I’m familiar with and new ones I’d never heard before. Even better, she provided commentary on the role of the patriarchy in how these women were portrayed, how the stories were told, and most importantly how that are still relevant today.
Her retelling of Medusa (my favourite character after Athena) inspired me to create a collection of tote bags with some of the wonderous women of Greek mythology, from the viewpoint of women. Both the bags and designs are made by yours truly (I’ve had to teach myself how to draw!). Currently we have Arachne, Casandra, Styx and of course Medusa. I’m currently working of the stories of Europa, Leda and Danae (Survivors of Zeus), as well as the Amazons, Pandora, The Amazons and many, many more.
